Over 7000 Americans have been killed by lightning in 34 years. The chances of being struck by lightning in the U.S. are about 1 in 250,000 and 400,000 in a given year.  In the U.S. each year, between 75 and 150 people are reported killed by lightning with 5 to 30 times that being injured. 

Many hazardous weather events are also caused by thunderstorms. It causes many fires worldwide each year and kills many people from being struck by lightning. Sometimes, rainfall from thunderstorms causes flash floods, which can change can make even small rivers to flood in a matter of minutes. Also, hail up to the size of softballs can damages cars, windows and kill unsheltered wildlife. Strong winds that are more than 120mph winds can knock down trees and power lines. Tornadoes with 300mph winds can destroy many buildings.
