Alie & William's Thunderstorms 101

Here are some signs that a major thunderstorm is approaching:

Dark, towering, or threatening clouds.

Distant lightning and thunder.

If you see these signs, you should keep these supplies on hand:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries
  • First aid kit and manual
  • Emergency food and water
  • Nonelectric can opener
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Sturdy shoes
When a major thunderstorm is occurring, here is what you should do:

If inside, you should secure any precarious outside objects, make sure the windows and doors are completely shut, and avoid electronics and light switches. Also, it is a good idea to avoid bathtubs and sinks, because the metal pipes can transmit electricity.
To keep informed about the storm, it is good to keep a battery operated radio on and close at hand.

If outside, you should try to get into a building or car. If that isn't possible, you should go to an open space and squat low on the ground as fast as possible. If you are in the woods, you should find an area of low trees. Never stand underneath a single large tree. You should crouch with your hands on your knees, not lie on the ground.
You should stay away from natural lighting rods (golf clubs, bicycles), tall structures, and bodies of water.
If you feel your hand stand on end (which means lighting is about to strike) you should bend forward with you hands on your knees. Your feet should be together and you should be crouching.

If you are in a car, you should pull over and turn on the emergency flashers of the car. Also, avoid flooded roadways.
